Osprey Banding at Kent Lake nest was my first experience.

My 2nd banding observation was at foot of American cell tower behind ACME store in Brighton. The story was similar to the first one except that banding happened right in front of me. The nest is still quite far away (vertically this time) for my 400mm lens.

1. A worker was sent to the top of the tower to retrieve the baby ospreys

2. Similar thing happend. The osprey Mom came back with a whole goldfish before the baby was retrieved from the nest

3. She circled above the nest with fish in her talons, squawking and turning.

8. A baby was retrieved from the nest and lowered to the ground.

9. A federal metal band was first installed.

10. Followed by a color plastic band

11. Feathers were measured and counted. Both babies were identified as female.

12. Barb said the babies were a little older than the age when banding is relatively easy. They were a little feisty, and had to be wrapped in a towel during the whole process

13. I was able to get a few quick passport photos for her during a brief moment she strugled her head out

14. Compared with baby ospreys, adults have lighter yellow eyes. (The osprey Mom at Point Mouille nest)

15. Barb mentioned at ACME banding that 4 babies at Point Mouille nest were banded last week. Usually there are two or three babies in a nest. Four is uncommon. I visited Point Mouille nest and saw both parents, but was not able to see any baby's head or wing poping up. Hope they are all fine. I'll go visit again to get some photos when the babies fledge.

More to come. Stay tuned... :)
